Pharmacology: Pharmacodynamics/Pharmacokinetics: Vitamin C is necessary for collagen formation and tissue repair; involved in some oxidation-reduction reactions as well as other metabolic pathways, such as synthesis of carnitine, steroids, and catecholamines and conversion of folic acid to folinic acid.
Absorption: Oral: Readily absorbed; an active process thought to be dose dependent.
Distribution: Large.
Metabolism: Hepatic via oxidation and sulfation.
Excretion: Urine (with high blood levels).
Treatment of Vitamin C deficiency.
Dissolve one sachet with a glass of cool water and drink once daily.
Symptoms include renal calculi. nausea, gastritis, and diarrhea. Diuresis with forced fluids may be useful following massive ingestion.
Patients with G-6PD deficiency, history of kidney stones, hyperoxaluria, oxalate metabolism disorders, and thalassemia. Individuals with known hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients.
Patients with diabetes and patients prone to recurrent renal calculi (eg, dialysis patients) should not take excessive doses for extended periods of time (some studies point to as little as 100 mg/day).
Pregnancy risk factor is A/C (dose exceeding RDA recommendation) and vitamin C is compatible. Enter breast milk.
Large doses of Vitamin C may cause diarrhea, gastro-intestinal disturbances, hyperoxaluria and the formation of renal calcium oxalate calculi.
Vitamin C enhances iron absorption from the GI tract. Concomitant vitamin C taken with oral contraceptive may increase contraceptive effect. Vitamin C and fluphenazine may decrease fluphenazine levels. Vitamin C and warfarin may decrease anticoagulant effect.
